Digital Forensics: Standards for the Future
Control-F Managing Director, Kevin Mansell, recently attended a meeting for digital forensic practitioners held by the UK’s forensic regulator, Andrew Rennison in Birmingham.
The forensic regulator has now replaced the Council for Registration of Forensic Practitioners (CRFP) as the body with responsibility for overseeing quality in forensic practice. Through a series of presentations the meeting communicated the message that UK providers of forensic services will be subject to far greater scrutiny than in the past. This impacts digital forensics specifically as it is one of a small number of disciplines that has been selected for initial roll-out of the new standards.
Control-F welcomes this increased scrutiny as a much needed step in “levelling the playing field” in terms of how digital forensics is conducted. The standards process will also generate a valuable debate regarding good practice and clarifying the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies, commercial service providers as well as tool vendors.
